The Edward N. and Della L. Thome Adult and Senior Care Center is an adult day care setting located on the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Campus in Windsor Mill, Maryland. As a sector of the Easter Seals Community, its goal is to provide supportive services to seniors with the ability to live as independently as possible. JSR Associates was referred to the project because of their reputation and understanding of designing person-centered care models and their senior living design expertise. They took an existing industrial park building and reinvented the space to have an open floor plan, flexible and functional social and administrative spaces and interior décor that not only compliments the traditional design elements, but also takes into account the physical needs of the care population. The physical design provided an opportunity to transform the culture by creating interactive spaces within the center. The nucleus of the design is the residential scaled kitchen that fosters interaction and activities that occur naturally in the home. Upon arriving from their existing center, some of the participants shed a few joyful tears at seeing the completed project.
